Lower or raise the thermostat before leaving or going to bed. A great way to do this automatically would be to install a programmable thermostat.
This device will allow you to set a schedule to adjust the temperature up or down a couple of degrees during the day when you are gone and at night when you are in bed and even better raise the temperature back before you have to get up.
Make sure the fireplace damper is closed when the fireplace is not in use.

Put a timer on the water heater.
Lower the temperature for your water heater, but not below 140 degrees.
Keep in mind that you can use your ceiling fans in reverse during the winter.
Replace weather stripping to help lessen air loss around doors and windows.
